Bring more meaning to the New Year 2018 at work

“New Year, new me” is one of those sayings that everyone tries to incorporate into their new year, be it in an individual level or as a team at work. This saying brings in more meaning than just a mere New Year’s resolution, but rather giving more meaning to the year ahead. The New Year opens a window to new possibilities of improving or changing last year’s ways, and it could be as grand or petite as you wish. This holds greater meaning in a team perspective as it does in an individual sense to identify the improvements and additions that needs to be made in order to better the year to come. 365 days presented in front of you to find and adjust the old ways that proved itself ineffective or insufficient, and make a positive change for the better. Those 12 months may speed on by much like the year before if you don’t start right away, and here are a few ways to help you out!
What? Why? When?
These are three questions that cover the main ground that builds the foundation around the purpose of the year to come. In a team perspective and in an individual level this can give a more detailed view of the expectations of the months ahead, providing a clear cut path to the goals to be achieved. Included as a personal plan or as a part of the quarterly plan will help break down the individual contributions and improvements that will be a part of the New Year. This allows the employees an opportunity to reflect upon the past year and identify shortcomings and downfalls themselves without a superiors help or guidance. To which you can later add and adjust as required based on the review done on your employee the year before.
Create influencers
The influencer system has been around the internet for a while and proved itself effective with the level of attention it has grabbed over the years. Creating an influencer within the organisation can help employees work through the rough patches that may slow them down. This concept takes similar form to mentoring but as appose to appointing them to an individual, you can invite influential character within or outside the organisation to speak or share knowledge on the practical aspects of work and its challenges. This can be customised to fit the field of work on a departmental basis to bring in more meaning than a generic speech to everyone. Afterall it is those that work in the field that know it’s downsides and limitations.
Own your baggage
We all come with a certain amount of baggage, and in a team perspective it matters how each handle each other’s and work around it. The key to which becomes owning up to the little weaknesses that make one different from another. Although, this becomes one of the hardest things in the workplace when competition keeps increasing day by day. It becomes almost impossible to admit to the little weaknesses that lie within us, when in reality we should work together to fulfill each other’s weaknesses. Encourage team work helps your employees identify and own up to the little qualities that make them feel incomplete. Encourage each one to speak on what they believe their weaknesses are help them develop those as a part of the self-development process.
Every day at work is a challenge in many ways, and with a new year there is more and more pressure building up to make a change. Often this is a process taken up at a personal level with little to no involvement from the workplace. Although this becomes the perfect opportunity to encourage self and team growth within the workplace and an opportunity to conduct and manage performance related activities with a difference. Waving goodbye to the typical performance evaluations that require a one on one discussion and a rating system, this can take a subtle spin on the formal process. This allows employees to think of their own goals while focusing on those that effect the work place both individually and at a team level. Let the New Year inspire a new change within the workplace and let the change start small from each team.
